Surprise

My post for Mom’s birthday was a bit of a decoy.  I shared fun Mom memories and pretended like I wasn’t exactly sure how we would celebrate this weekend.  Yeah, um… not so much.

What a great idea to plan a surprise party for Mom’s 50th birthday!  Mom would never go to the trouble of planning a party for herself, but she is the first one to jump on board when it comes to planning something for someone else.  Ashley came up with this great idea around Christmastime.  She was asked to be in a friend’s wedding and as soon as she heard the date, she realized it would be on Mom’s birthday weekend.  She got the thoughts going and then left it to Dad and me to plan since she would be back to school in California. It sure was hard to keep a secret for this long.  By Sunday morning I almost couldn’t stand it any longer.  We got her so good!

She had tried to ruin our sneaky party plans several times.  First she was coming up with other things she wanted to do that afternoon.  Dad had to talk her out of that by telling her that it was more important to spend the day with Ashley since she was here for such a short time this trip.  Then she took that idea to the extreme and decided that she would stay home from church this Sunday so that she could cook a nice, big family lunch for everyone.  We had to work really hard to talk her out of this one.  I tried to tell her that it wouldn’t be right for her to have to make her own birthday meal… but really she just needed to be out of the house long enough for us to get everything set up.

In the end she went with the flow and the plan worked out perfectly.  Dad got her to go to second service so that Jesse, Ashley, and I would have enough time to decorate the house and pick up the food before she got home from church.  Dad even came up with annoying errands to stall her a little longer to allow time for all of her friends to arrive too.

Group eatingDadDad shared some highlights about the most important things that stood out to him about Mom during their life together so far. The way she waited for him to finish school so they could get married. The way she is so passionate and dedicated to raising her kids the best she could. And the way that she has been willing to move with him out of the country and across the country as his job brought him. It was pretty awesome to hear their background together summed up in a nice little package like that. What a good example they are both as a couple and as parents.

After that it was time for La Verne cake! She did an awesome job (as always). I had sent her a picture the plates I had bought so that she could get an idea of what colors to use. I didn’t expect it to match so perfectly. She always does great, but I think this is my favorite La Verne cake so far.

Of course, Ashley got plenty of suggestions from the math nuts when it came to cutting the cake into perfect pieces.

Then Mom opened her gifts from people who obviously know her very well.

It was a lot of fun to get the chance to plan something for Mom for a change. Dad did all of the food and invitations, and I got to buy decorations and set things up. My favorite part of planning was printing out several pictures of her through the years to show her friends all her many hair styles.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Today is Mom’s 50th birthday! I happened to be looking through my scrapbooks this week and was laughing at all the silly things we used to do.  Mom always had such creative and fun ideas to keep us entertained when we were kids (and now too).

Funny dinnerOne thing that I remember very well was “funny dinner” and I have no idea why that is such a fond memory.  I think it mostly happened when Dad was out of town.  Maybe Mom was extra tired without Dad around and didn’t feel like making dinner or maybe we were making her just a little nut-so.  But I remember that it was fun.  She would find the most unusual dishes to eat our dinner out of.  Looks like that night I was drinking my milk out of a muffin pan with a straw.  I tried to explain to Jesse why we liked “funny dinner” and it sounds ridiculous now, but we couldn’t wait to see what Mom would come out of the kitchen with.  I still have funny dinner now, without the crazy dishes.  When I’m too tired to think of what to have for dinner I sometimes end up with sausage, rice, and an apple.  Now he can see where that came from.

This week were were watching a new TLC show called Outrageous Kid Parties.  These people spent over $30,000 on their son’s 7th birthday party by hiring actors to play pirates, ordering costumes for everyone to wear, and went insane with the decorations.  I remember that one of my favorite birthday parties as a kid was my “purple pizza pool party!”  At the time, my favorite color was purple so Mom thought it would be fun to make everything at the party have to start with the letter P.  All my decorations were purple, we swam at the pool, and ate pizza.  Of course all my friends spent the night too and Mom came up with silly and fun games for us to play… and that’s a party I still remember.

We are looking forward hanging out and celebrating with Mom this weekend.  I’m not sure exactly what all we will do, but it doesn’t matter because she taught us how to have fun together no matter what we are doing.  It works out great because Ashley happens to be coming home this weekend because she is going to be a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding.  I know Mom will just love that everyone will be together… having fun.

True Community

I’ve mentioned before that Jesse and I are a part of a Bible study group that meets weekly, Monday nights. They are a great group of Christ followers that are all in our age group and enjoy fellowship and learning together. We just finished up our study on the book of Hebrews.

We look forward to group night when we get a chance to catch up with them and just hang out. That’s why we were disappointed when another obligation came up for Monday nights. We thought long and hard about what we should do since we were so committed to the group. We finally decided that since it is only temporary, it was important enough that we would ask/tell our group that we would not be able to attend for a few weeks.

GroupAlmost without thinking, they unanimously decided that group should switch to another night so that we would still be able to attend. We are so thankful that the rest of the group was so willing to rearrange their busy schedules to accommodate us. So, last night was our first Tuesday night group.

In the year before joining our current group, we had been trying out several different churches closer to our new house. They each had similar groups, but people just weren’t very committed to coming each week and we really weren’t learning anything new. I’m so glad that we finally decided that it was worth the extra drive to return to our old church. It was our first Sunday back that we were invited to try out this group, and we’ve been plugged in since then.

The only thing is that we are so confused about what day it is now. We’ve been meeting so long on Mondays, we didn’t know what we were supposed to be doing today. We can deal with that though. 🙂
