The Demotion of Junk

For those of you who don’t know, I am a pack rat. I admit it. I like to save every thing so that I will be able to enjoy it… later. However, I do maintain that I am a very tidy pack rat. Most all of my fabulous treasures are stored nicely and neatly in containers, stacked in various locations.

Today I started on the huge project of cleaning out some of our garage “junk.” Jesse gets offended if I refer to his stuff as “junk.” Whether it’s stuff or “junk” we both have a lot of it and I really can’t figure out why we choose to keep some of it.

Here is how stuff works in our house. We buy some little trinket, a souvenir, or an awesome thrift store find that we have to have. I try really hard these days to evaluate how much I really do need an item, knowing that there is a limited amount of stuff that our house will hold. For a while, this item is first-class stuff. It’s proudly displayed on a desk or a shelf so that we can look at it often.

After a while, we get tired of looking at a particular treasure. The item receives it’s first demotion to second-class stuff. It is then tucked away in a drawer or put in a closet. It’s still fairly accessible, just in case it makes a come back to first-class stuff. This is a fine storage solution until the inevitable happens… newer first-class junk is demoted, making it necessary for more space in the second-class locations.

Now the item is officially classified as third-class junk. It gets put in bins out in the garage. We have no idea what is in the bins or why we need all the stuff in the bins, but for some reason we can’t bring ourselves to part with select pieces of our junk.

Storage bins

Eventually we have to empty some of the bins, lest we run out of space. After years of holding on to these little trinkets, we can finally bring ourselves to part with them. It’s not a very fun job, but it is amusing to see what we have chosen to keep. Here are a few examples of things that I was “saving.” I have no idea why they were necessary to keep, but they are now in the trash.

Trash

Key chains. The cow one used to moo when you squeezed it, but it has long since died. The frog… I have no idea the significance of that one.

Key chains

Power bubble tape dispenser. Does anyone else remember bubble tape gum? This dispenser held it and when you pressed the button, gum would come out like a tape measure. On the plus side… at least it didn’t still have the gum inside it!

Glitter pens. Only a few of them were open, all of them were completely dried out. These didn’t fend well being saved forever.

Scary pins. I painted these myself, but they kinda scare me. No wonder those were kept in the garage.

I’m proud of myself for being able to get rid of some stuff, but there is still a long ways to go before are garage is back to being neat again. Then the cycle of junk can continue once again.

Meet the Bowers Family

Yesterday we had the special opportunity to meet another of our CF friends, Kaleb Bowers and his family. It is so much fun to get to meet people after getting to know them online. They read our blogs and we keep up with theirs, A little hope from Oklahoma. They were great and we had fun hanging out with them.

We first came to know the Bowers family about a year ago when Kaleb’s mom, Kristi, came across and commented Jesse’s blog (if we remember correctly). Jesse really connected with Kaleb when he found out Kaleb was going in for his forth sinus surgery, and he was going to have to be in the hospital for his 10th birthday. Jesse’s heart really went out to Kaleb, knowing how not fun hospital stays can be. So we sent a little care package as an encouragement. Then when we found out Jesse would need his tenth sinus surgery Kaleb drew him a picture of a killer whale with all the killer whale facts that we hung on the wall during recovery. They’ve been friends and kept in contact since then.

Kaleb and his family were chosen by the Make-A-Wish foundation to have a fabulous vacation to Florida. They are getting awesome behind the scenes passes to Sea World, Univeral Studios, and some of the Disney parks. And since they are staying not to far from our house, we’ve been planning on being able to get together with them for months. So we drove over to the Give Kids the World resort they are staying at, which is so cool. It looks like the inside of Disneyland, it reminded me of Mickey’s Toontown!

We met up with David, his wife Kristi, Kaleb’s younger sister Hannah, and Kaleb! They were so sweet to bring us necklaces from their Sea World day. Mine is a pink orca that matches with Hannah’s necklace. Jesse got an orca tale that matches Kaleb’s necklace.

Necklaces

We were careful to follow our doctor’s rule for meeting other CFers, especially with Kaleb’s younger and healthier lungs. We kept the three foot rule and even brought masks so that Jesse could give Kaleb a hug. They said they were smiling, in case you can’t tell.

Then we all headed out to play some mini golf. Unfortunately, it was raining pretty much the entire time we were playing. Boo! I think it was the first time I’ve been cold during the summer in Florida. It was quite breezy and we were soaked. But we still had fun and it gave us a chance to get to know them a little better.

Then we all headed back to the Give Kids the World resort to dry off and get some ice cream. They have this cool ice cream shop that is always open for free ice cream. I heard Kristi tell the kids that vacation meant they could eat ice cream all the time. Two thumbs up for that rule!

I know we will be keeping in touch with the Bowers family and hope that we will get to see them again some day. It means a lot to Jesse to be able to be an encouragement to a younger fibro. He always says he wishes he had known someone like that when he was a kid. What a great family, they are definitely very deserving of this vacation!!

Happy (Far Away) Birthday Ash!

Today my sister, Ashley, turns 24! Ashley has been working very hard at her studies and will be going into her third year toward her doctorate of Psychology degree.  Because she lives so far away she isn’t going to make it home for her birthday this year… making it the first time I haven’t spent her birthday with her. 🙁

I’m glad we all had the opportunity to spend so much time with her on our California trip last month. It was great to see all that she has been up to the last couple of years.

I think that one of Ashley’s best qualities is her silliness. She is and has always been super silly. She is always laughing and making jokes. She is fun to be around and makes friends easily. Her laid back and happy attitude makes her easy to get along with and I think it will help her become a great Psychologist!

That’s not to say that we haven’t had our share of not getting along times, especially since we shared a room for most of our growing up years. I can remember when we used to draw a do-not-cross-line down the middle of our room with tape when we were mad at each other. We also used to fight all the time over whether or not we would sleep with the window open. But that’s all just part of growing up.

Wish you could be home to celebrate your birthday, but I’m sure that your fam ’14 friends will make it a special one for you. Have a very happy birthday!! 🙂
