Three Ways to Save Money on Groceries

We may only be two people, but keeping our grocery budget on track is a definite challenge in our house. When we first got married we could swing by the grocery store on our way home from somewhere and just make up our list as we shopped. Now with my allergy diet in combination with Jesse’s CFer diet, there is no way we could afford to do that anymore.

Grocery shopping

With some planning and a little extra shopping time I’ve managed to cut a huge chunk out of our grocery bill… and no I’m not an extreme couponer. I do use coupons, but mostly for cleaning and household products. There aren’t a whole lot of coupons out there for real food, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still save a lot of money. Here’s what I’ve learned:

1. Use store competition to your advantage. There are two grocery stores right near our house, both are competing for our business. This means that when something goes on sale at one store, the other store will often have it on sale the following week. Why not take advantage of both sales? It may sound like a lot of extra work, but it’s really not. I think it’s worth it for the money I have saved.

On Tuesday store number one sends their ad flyer in the mail. I will usually stop by that store on Wednesday and buy ONLY their sale items. On this trip I’m mostly interested in the produce and meat departments. Then I will plan my weekly meals around the sale items I already bought. On Fridays I do my real shopping at store number two. With the most expensive items already purchased (meats), I can focus on getting the filler items that I need to round out my recipes.

2. Be willing to switch brands. There are some items where I am very brand loyal, but there are other items that it really doesn’t make a difference who makes it. I will clip lots of coupons and then wait until the store happens to have that item on sale, and buy whichever is cheaper after the coupon. This way you can double your savings on one item.

I don’t really believe in creating a stockpile like you see people doing on the coupon shows on TV. I really see no reason why I would ever need a collection of one thousand toothbrushes. However, I do think it’s a great idea to buy a little extra when there is a sale on items such as canned foods or frozen vegetables. I only buy frozen vegetable when they are less than $1, and I buy a lot when they are that price. This way I’m set for quite a while, enough to last until they go on sale again.

3. Buy fresh, seasonal foods. People tell me all the time that my fresh foods diet must be so expensive. While it is true that I spend a large portion of my grocery budget in the produce section, I save even more by avoiding the cookies and crackers isle. Convenience foods are convenient because someone else has already done the work to make it and they’re ready to eat. If you make snacks yourself, you save the convenience charge.

I try not to go into the store with a list of produce I want to buy. Instead I buy what is in season and has the lowest prices. It took me a while to learn what a reasonable price is for each type of fruit or vegetable. But once you pay $1.25 for a package of raspberries, you’re sure not willing to pay $4.99 for that same package the next week. I just wait until they go on sale again, to the maximum price I’m willing to pay.

That’s it! That’s my strategy to saving money on groceries. I realize that two grocery trips might be unreasonable for someone who is working full-time. I know I didn’t shop this way when I working full-time. But now that I am able to work from home, this has been an excellent way to save money while still enjoying the foods we love.

Blog Redesign

As you can see… we redesigned my blog!! What do you think? I love it. I’m so glad that I happen to be married to such an awesome web designer, otherwise I don’t think I could afford such a customized blog design.

The blog redesign was initially Jesse’s idea. Since my last design he has been to several design conferences and his design skills have improved greatly. He suggested that I really should think about making some changes to update the look of my blog. At first I said no because I hate change and I still liked the old design. Then the more I thought about it, the more I realized that some changes would really be an improvement.

Old blog design

Apparently, I happen to be one of Jesse’s more picky “clients.” But that’s only because I see all of the sites he has created so I know what he is capable of doing. I also know from experience that he can make my blog display just about anything that I’ve dreamed up in my head. While we were working he kept trying to tell me things couldn’t be done… but then he figured out how to do them. I’m helping him broaden his skills even more.

The main goal of the design was to create a much simpler look. We thought that there was just too much color that was drawing attention away from the actual content. Now I still have a cute, crafty, custom look that is less busy and easier to read. We’ve added a couple new features: the sidebar now has a few affiliate links and links to other sites I use and we added a shop button in the menu bar to share some of my favorite allergy-free snacks and treats!

I’m very happy with our finished product and hope you like it too! Thanks for making me a new site, Jesse!

Morrow County Fair

We headed out to the fair yesterday. It was quite a bit warmer than it was when we went to the fair last year. Last year we were bundled up with a couple of layers. This year we dressed in our coordinating Ohio State shirts. Grandma took a picture on our way out.

It was nice and sunny when we first got to the fair. A little later it drizzled a little which cooled it down and made me need to put on a sweater.

Fairgrounds

First thing we did was admire some of the tractors, since Grandpa wasn’t able to go with us to enjoy them this year. Jesse even climbed into a couple of the ones on display like he remembers doing as a kid.

We walked over to look at the sheep. They were in the middle of showing them to the judge. We weren’t quite sure exactly what they were grading them on. The owners made sure the sheep had all their legs lined up nicely and then the judge was feeling their back before he awarded them a ribbon.

Then we watched some people show their cows. Again it was hard to determine how the cows were being graded. We kept picking our favorite, but our favorite never won. I guess our standards weren’t the same as the judges’ standards.

Cows

It was pretty amazing how these people handled such large animals. One little girl had to be no more than eight and was getting this huge cow to do everything she wanted it to.

More cows

We also watched some of the horses in action. We saw all these same animals last year, but we walked through their pens instead of watching them in action. It was neat to see them doing stuff.

Horses

They were doing some contest where the riders had to hold a piece of paper under their leg while they rode in circles. Not sure what they point was, but the last person to still have their paper seems to have won.

We walked through the work horses barn. Jesse couldn’t resist one of the little guys. He was kicking the door of his pen like he wanted to be pet.

We grabbed some lunch too. Jesse was really looking forward to his fair food. He had a pulled pork sandwich on thick texas toast and curly fries with cheese. I think he enjoyed it!

Jesse's lunch

I brought my own, not-so-fun lunch of ham and veggies. Boo! There’s no way I could have handled that food, but it did look good.

My lunch

We walked through the craft barn and saw all the winning produce. We were talking with one of Grandpa and Grandma’s friends the other day about kohlrabi. I hadn’t had it before, so Jesse was able to point one out to me. The huge sunflowers were cool too, they were bigger than my head.

Prize winning produce

We did a quick walk through of the pig and cow barns on our way out. They’re just fun to look at. We got to see a few of each getting a bath too. I headed straight to the shower when we got home. The combination of the animal smells mixed with the dust getting kicked up off the ground had my nose running pretty good. We had a fun fair day!
