Meet Denise

Yesterday we had the opportunity to meet Denise Fahr. We’ve been keeping up with their blog ever since her husband, Jim, had his lung transplant. She was vacationing in Florida with her parents, just about an hour drive from our house. It’s so funny to meet people in person after reading about them for so long. The first thing I said to Jesse when we saw her walk out of her hotel room was, “Wow, she looks just like her blog pictures!” Duh, not sure where that thought came from. I think I was just a little bit surprised to recognize someone I had never met before.

Denise was great. She is such a sweet and completely genuine person. It’s amazing how happy and positive she is, especially with all that they have been through this year. We were planning to sit around the pool with her, but the weather was just a little too chilly for that. Instead we chatted for a while and played some mini golf that was at the resort she was staying at.

Denise and Jesse

Us playing mini golfI was surprised at how easy she was talk to. Meeting someone for the first time, I wasn’t too sure what all we would talk about. The best part was the complete understanding of our situation with need for explanations. When we talked about cooking, I mentioned something about needing to be extra creative with recipes that I could eat that would still have enough calories for Jesse. I usually feel the need to explain why the amount of calories we consume at dinner is so important… CFers need tons more calories than most people. She, of course, got that right away. When we left the hotel room to walk around the resort, she checked to make sure walking that much wouldn’t be too hard for Jesse. Jesse does have days when he tires easily while walking, but mostly that’s no problem at all. After walking for a while, Jesse had a cough spasm. Normally that would have been a bit awkward because he is trying to communicate to people that he is okay even though he looks like his head is about to explode. It was nice to see that it didn’t catch her off guard.

I’m very glad we made time to get to meet her. Next year she expects that Jim will be able to travel with her. We will look forward to the chance to get to meet him as well. She said that Jim and Jesse are a lot alike. I hope we have lots more opportunities to meet other CF families also. That is just part of our lives that we don’t share with too many people. We are grateful that our friends make an effort to understand more about CF, but it’s something that they just can’t get.

Surprise

My post for Mom’s birthday was a bit of a decoy.  I shared fun Mom memories and pretended like I wasn’t exactly sure how we would celebrate this weekend.  Yeah, um… not so much.

What a great idea to plan a surprise party for Mom’s 50th birthday!  Mom would never go to the trouble of planning a party for herself, but she is the first one to jump on board when it comes to planning something for someone else.  Ashley came up with this great idea around Christmastime.  She was asked to be in a friend’s wedding and as soon as she heard the date, she realized it would be on Mom’s birthday weekend.  She got the thoughts going and then left it to Dad and me to plan since she would be back to school in California. It sure was hard to keep a secret for this long.  By Sunday morning I almost couldn’t stand it any longer.  We got her so good!

She had tried to ruin our sneaky party plans several times.  First she was coming up with other things she wanted to do that afternoon.  Dad had to talk her out of that by telling her that it was more important to spend the day with Ashley since she was here for such a short time this trip.  Then she took that idea to the extreme and decided that she would stay home from church this Sunday so that she could cook a nice, big family lunch for everyone.  We had to work really hard to talk her out of this one.  I tried to tell her that it wouldn’t be right for her to have to make her own birthday meal… but really she just needed to be out of the house long enough for us to get everything set up.

Surprised Mom

In the end she went with the flow and the plan worked out perfectly.  Dad got her to go to second service so that Jesse, Ashley, and I would have enough time to decorate the house and pick up the food before she got home from church.  Dad even came up with annoying errands to stall her a little longer to allow time for all of her friends to arrive too.

Group eatingDadDad shared some highlights about the most important things that stood out to him about Mom during their life together so far. The way she waited for him to finish school so they could get married. The way she is so passionate and dedicated to raising her kids the best she could. And the way that she has been willing to move with him out of the country and across the country as his job brought him. It was pretty awesome to hear their background together summed up in a nice little package like that. What a good example they are both as a couple and as parents.

After that it was time for La Verne cake! She did an awesome job (as always). I had sent her a picture the plates I had bought so that she could get an idea of what colors to use. I didn’t expect it to match so perfectly. She always does great, but I think this is my favorite La Verne cake so far.

Of course, Ashley got plenty of suggestions from the math nuts when it came to cutting the cake into perfect pieces.

Then Mom opened her gifts from people who obviously know her very well.

It was a lot of fun to get the chance to plan something for Mom for a change. Dad did all of the food and invitations, and I got to buy decorations and set things up. My favorite part of planning was printing out several pictures of her through the years to show her friends all her many hair styles.

True Community

I’ve mentioned before that Jesse and I are a part of a Bible study group that meets weekly, Monday nights. They are a great group of Christ followers that are all in our age group and enjoy fellowship and learning together. We just finished up our study on the book of Hebrews.

We look forward to group night when we get a chance to catch up with them and just hang out. That’s why we were disappointed when another obligation came up for Monday nights. We thought long and hard about what we should do since we were so committed to the group. We finally decided that since it is only temporary, it was important enough that we would ask/tell our group that we would not be able to attend for a few weeks.

GroupAlmost without thinking, they unanimously decided that group should switch to another night so that we would still be able to attend. We are so thankful that the rest of the group was so willing to rearrange their busy schedules to accommodate us. So, last night was our first Tuesday night group.

In the year before joining our current group, we had been trying out several different churches closer to our new house. They each had similar groups, but people just weren’t very committed to coming each week and we really weren’t learning anything new. I’m so glad that we finally decided that it was worth the extra drive to return to our old church. It was our first Sunday back that we were invited to try out this group, and we’ve been plugged in since then.

The only thing is that we are so confused about what day it is now. We’ve been meeting so long on Mondays, we didn’t know what we were supposed to be doing today. We can deal with that though. 🙂
