Road Trip – Fail!

Today has been one of the weirdest days in my life. It’s one of those days that is so far beyond NOT funny while it is happening, but maybe we’ll think it’s a little funny after it’s over. Only because we never could have dreamed up any of the situations we have found ourselves in today.

As Monk would say, “Here’s what happened:”

Early Monday morning Grandpa Sipes (Jesse’s grandpa) was taken to the ER with heart problems. Luckily, Jesse’s aunt happened to be in town visiting them so she’s been able to help out Grandpa and Grandma with all the hospital stuff. Jesse let her know that we could make ourselves available if they needed us or if anything about his condition got worse. She told us Tuesday afternoon that it would be great if we were able to stay with them for a while after she left to help get them all set up on new home health care. Jesse felt strongly that this was something we could do so we decided to get packing and leave as soon as we could.

I packed up a bunch of clothes pretty quickly. I’m usually not a very light packer to begin with because I like to have choices, but packing in such a rush means I brought even more than normal. Then I made a quick trip to Nutrition S’Mart to stock up on my special allergy foods that I probably wont be able to get there. I felt like a fugitive, packing everything we might need and stuffing it into the car and taking off. It’s a good thing we decided to drive because there is no way we would have been able to fly with all the stuff we brought.

Me driving

So the day started off great. Jesse even let me take the first driving shift since I knew I would crash as soon as the adrenaline rush from my packing high wore off. We were talking and snacking, enjoying the road trip. Then all of a sudden all of the warning lights in the dashboard come on at once and the car started loosing power. Jesse immediately moved over to pull off at the next exit. By the time we were off the exit ramp and on a little side road, the car had lost all power. We coasted down the deserted road wondering where we would stop. We pulled into a boat shop just as the car stopped running.

Boat shopBoat lot

It was completely dead. Jesse went into the boat shop to ask if one of the guys could try jump-starting the car. So the guy pulls his tractor over and hooked up the jumper cables. I just had to get a picture, I’ve never seen a jump-start from a little tractor. Unfortunately, that didn’t do the trick… fortunately, the guy happened to have a boat battery that would work for our car. We bought the battery and went on our way. We are so thankful for the help from this kind stranger… we happened to die right where someone was able to help us.

Tractor jump

We were pretty sure we had solved the problem since the boat guy ran a test on the battery to confirm it was truly dead. A few hours later the car repeated the same thing! This time we noticed the signs faster and quickly turned off the air conditioning, radio, and all the lights. That gave it enough power to drive a couple exits to where there was an auto store. Too bad it was already closed! Another jump-start from another stranger got us to Walmart for a battery charger and to a hotel for the night. We were pleasantly surprised with the fanciness of the hotel for the low price.

So now we’re here for the night and looking for a place to take the car in the morning. This is SO frustrating because this car is still new to us and we have had absolutely no problems with it. We even had it all checked out before we left to confirm it was in good condition for a road trip. Now we are stuck with no choice but to spend extra time and money to get it fixed so that we can get to where we are going.

We have two pretty funny things running in our hotel room tonight. We are charging our car battery to make sure we will have enough power to get to the car shop. That wasn’t easy to carry in. At least there is no chance someone can steal our car.

Jesse has his entire office set up since he needed to bring the computer to work on once we were at Grandpa and Grandma’s house. After unpacking the car he sat down and started answering emails like we were at home. At least something productive got done today.

Exhausting day… now it’s time to sleep in our king sized bed and hope for a more successful day tomorrow!

Cultures Collide

We have had such a busy and exhausting week. A couple of midnight airport runs will really mess up your body clock. Half of my family (Mom, Andrew, and Andrew’s girlfriend Nicole) just returned home from a mission trip to the Czech Republic. Our church has sent a team for several years to teach English and minister to the Czech people. We were excited to see them, but I think somehow staying up so late to greet everyone made us almost as tired as the ones who did the traveling.

My brother has had quite an adventure over the last month. While teaching English on last year’s Czech team he made good friends with one of his students, Milan. They planned all year to travel together this summer. Andrew went to the Czech Republic a couple of weeks early to stay at Milan’s house and travel around Europe before the rest of the Czech team arrived for the English camp. They got to see and do so many exciting things. After the English camp was over, Milan and his parents came home to stay with Andrew at my parents’ house and travel around the States. The four of them arrived just before midnight on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday (and early into Thursday) we waited to greet the rest of Czech team returning home.

It’s been fun to get to know Milan and his parents a little bit. They are super nice people. They have tried to teach us a couple of Czech words, but our Czech is no where near as good as their English. We even found the perfect opportunity to dig out the globe to find places they had visited and see just how far away from home they are. I think it’s kind of amazing to find similarities with people who live on the other side of the world!

Last night we had quite an interesting and diverse group together. It was the first time I had really had the chance to spend time with Nicole’s family. They joined us for the slide show of Milan and Andrew’s travels. Her Puerto Rican family is a lot of fun and a lot different from our family. They enjoyed getting to know our Czech friends as well. I have to concentrate to understand Nicole’s dad with his accent, so I found it most impressive that Milan was able to understand him so easily. Milan and Andrew narrated their travels and Mom and Nicole chimed in for the parts they were there for.

What a fun night! I am so tired after this week, I don’t think we’ll be doing anything tonight. Sounds like a good Netflix night.

Weekending

Weekends are kinda funny around our house. Since we both work from home now, weekends often tend to be not much different from week days. Some of Jesse’s clients work regular jobs so it works best for them to do consulting calls on the weekends when they are off from work. So sometimes he is busy on weekends and we take time off during the week instead.

This weekend Jesse was free. We made a fun and full weekend out of it. Saturday, after sleeping in, we had a shopping date. My shopping destination of choice? Goodwill, of course. The idea of shopping at thrift store used to be so unappealing to me. I fought the idea for many years until I finally let my sister drag me into the world of thrift store shopping. I had no idea what I was missing out on! On my last Goodwill trip I bought two pairs of jeans, one from Express, and a cute Ann Taylor Loft tank top.  All of it was barely worn and looked brand new. This trip I scored a skirt and a couple cute tops. Two of them were off the $2 rack. I wish I had converted sooner. I hate thinking about how much I used to spend on mall shopping trips.

New clothes

My other fabulous find was dishes that match our set. We bought our dishes after the design had been discontinued, which gave us a great bargain. However, it meant that we didn’t get to see all the serving dishes and such that matched. We bought the box sets before we were married that included dinner plates, small plates, bowls, and mugs. Goodwill had matching cereal bowls which we had to buy. Plus a serving platter that looks just like our dinner plates, only bigger. We got each of these pieces for $1.

Dishes

Then we headed to Jesse’s shopping destination… Ikea. We just wanted to stroll around and get some decorating ideas. It’s always fun to imagine what those rooms would look like in our house. Our favorite is all the bookcases they have, the floor-to-ceiling wrap-around-the-room bookcases. It looks nice in their living rooms, but I’m not sure how it would look in ours. Jesse was also looking forward to stopping at the food court on the way out. He loves their carbonated pear juice and he got a hot dog too. I even found a nice decorative plate for $5.

New plate

I got these decorative balls for my birthday, but hadn’t yet found the perfect dish to put them in. They were in a basket that I usually use to for serving chips. I think this looks much better.

We spent Sunday hanging out with Dad for Father’s day. Dad always likes to watch golf on Father’s day. I tend to find watching golf a little boring, but it’s hard to argue with what Dad wants to do on Father’s day. So we watched him watching golf. Then some of us fell asleep. Then we woke up and found other activities to keep us busy.

Dad watching golf

For Father’s day I baked Dad cupcakes. My original idea for the cupcakes was to draw all different things that reminded me of Dad such as golf clubs, airplanes, hockey sticks, and Math problems. Then I remembered that I don’t have enough artistic ability to draw an airplane on a cupcake. Rather than have to identify each of my drawings, I decided to go for just the Math problems since Dad is a mathematician.

I made red velvet cupcakes, just to be different. They were very messy to make. My whole kitchen was red. I’m not sure I’m choose that flavor again.

Red velvet cupcakes

I had consulted with my brother earlier in the week, who is studying advanced Math in college right now. I asked him to draw me a few of his favorite Math symbols or expressions. Isn’t that kind of a funny request, to have favorite Math expressions? Apparently not, his reply was just what I was looking for.

Instructions

I had two more symbols than I had cupcakes, since I had to draw these in icing I chose the two most complicated ones to exclude.

Decorating cupcakes

I think the end result was just geeky enough for Dad. However it did make it a little difficult to decide which cupcake to eat. And they afforded us the pleasure of Math jokes all evening. According to Andrew the one with the symbol for the set of all real numbers was extra filling because it contained all the numbers. Mom tested the one with the infinity symbol on in to see if it would grow back as she ate it, making it last forever. They were lots of fun, maybe you should make Math cupcakes for your next gathering!
